The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has announced on 2nd December, that the government will invest over 600 million euros, between 2021 and 2023, to develop a national Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy. According to PM Sanchez, 'if things go well', there is a possibility of further funding.
The new strategy will focus on turning Spain into a global centre for AI technology. The 600 million euro fund will focus on introducing and applying AI in business, administration and education.
Around 275 million euros will be invested into technological development, 133 million euros will be invested towards integrating AI into Spain's economy and production, and an additional 100 million euros will be spent towards integrating AI into public and government systems. The remaining 100 million euros will be invested towards increased research, education and professional training across Spain and creating a more gender-inclusive tech-based economy.
Sanchez has also said that the State will develop an ethical framework to ‘reinforce our individual rights and freedoms’ in the rapidly changing context of technology. He further added that AI is a ‘transversal technology that covers health, agriculture, protecting the environment,’ and said the new strategy will improve ‘systems of production, design, and cybersecurity
