The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) High Court has initiated an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Committee for the High court comprising of a 2-member team, the Chairperson and a member. Jawad Ahmed, the Registrar General of Jammu and Kashmir High Court has appointed Justice Rajesh Bindal of the J&K High Court as the Chairperson and Justice Puneet Gupta as a member on October 12.

The AI Committee will be in charge of ensuring cohesive integration of AI into automating the judicial process. It will look into aspects of the following:

  1.  Use of AI-Language Technology in the translation of judicial documents.
  2.  Use of AI in Process Automation on the administrative side.
  3.  Exploring the potential use of AI in legal research assistance on Judicial scale.
  4.  Exploring the potential use of AI in other Judicial avenues.

The move is to enable the legal teams to be better equipped to focus on more crucial and strategic work by automating certain mundane processes. In addition, an AI-based system could also prove to be able to assist judges to make decisions, thus lessen the gap between the shortage of judges and the inability of the judiciary to pass quality judgements for all cases, in a reasonable timeframe.
