India, with its thriving AI landscape and research capabilities, is poised to be the laboratory that leads the world into the fourth industrial revolution. The country also holds the distinction of having published the third highest number of research papers in Artificial Intelligence globally. At the forefront of all the action and progress surrounding AI and ML are the scientists, academicians and students at India's premier institutes that are leading the country to international prominence in the emerging technologies of Industry 4.0. Here is a look at some leading research initiatives in India.

  • Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur: Special Interest Group on Machine Learning (SIGML) at IITK is an endeavour to bring together people who share an excitement in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, NLP and Data Mining to discuss latest developments and research options. The forum, consisting researchers, practitioners and students, encourages research in emerging areas related to Machine Learning. IITK, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and iSMRITI, India's leading AI company, is conducting training courses for undergraduate students on introduction to AI, IoT and robotics to provide hands on experience to orient students towards the present industrial scenario.
  • Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata: Vision and Learning Research Group (VLRG) at ISI Kolkata was set up in 2011 with the aim to conduct fundamental and advanced research in the area of computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition and machine learning. The research group has published several papers in IEEE, ISMM, ICIP and ISVC, especially in areas like image and video processing, image reconstruction and image and pattern recognition.
  • Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee: Electronics & ICT academy (E&ICT) at IITR, under the aegis of Ministry of Electronics & IT, has a specific purpose of training of professionals and academicians in the emerging technologies in the Electronics and ICT domain, including AI, ML and NLP. It also has industry collaborations for conducting training programs and research. IITR offers AI and ML summer courses through National Knowledge Network (NKN) by inviting experts from premier institutes and industries.
  • National Institute of Technology Warangal: NIT Warangal has established a Mini Centre of Excellence for Big Data, a high end lab in CSE department, which offers course and research opportunities in data science and analytics.
