One of the most broadly applied areas of Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP) gives machines the ability to understand and manipulate human language. NLP algorithms have varied capabilities, from sentiment analysis, to language translations, to question-answering, to even chatbots. Researchers at prestigious Indian universities are working hard to best employ these applications for maximum benefit and carry out further meaningful research to advance these capabilities.

  • Indic TTS at IIT Madras: This is a project on developing text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis systems for Indian languages, improving quality of synthesis, as well as small foot print TTS integrated with disability aids and various other applications. This is a consortium based project involving 13 institutions, IITM being one of them.
  • Center for Indian Language Technology (CFILT) at IIT Bombay: Set up in 2000, CFILT has about 30 research members including PhD, masters and bachelor students, faculty members, linguists and lexicographers. Deep semantics and multilinguality has throughout played a pivotal role in the activities of CFILT leading to research in multiple fronts.
  • Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) at IIIT Hyderabad: LTRC conducts research on both basic and applied aspects of language technology. It is the largest academic centre of speech and language technology in South Asia. LTRC carries out its work through four labs, which work in synergy with each other.
  • Machine And Language Learning (MALL) Lab at IISc Bangalore: MALL is a group of researchers, engineers, and students, led by Partha Talukdar. One of their primary research goals is to extract, orgazine, and make readily available the knowledge trapped inside unstructured web data on a large scale.
  • Special Interest Group on Machine Learning (SIGML) at IIT Kanpur: It was born out of an effort to bring together people interested in areas of Machine Learning, Data Mining and related fields. With NLP as a major area of interest, the group aims at organizing problem solving sessions, seminars, research days, workshops and guest lectures.
  • NLP-ML Lab at SRM University: The main objective for setting up this lab is to make the student community cognizant about the two research areas namely, NLP and ML. A variety of interesting research projects have been completed, including cricket game prediction, machine translation from English-Hindi, emotion detection for texts, etc..
