IndiaAI MISSION: STANDARDIZING DATA FOR AI-DRIVEN INNOVATION AND GROWTH

Data is a fundamental prerequisite for making Al in India and making Al work for India. Seamless access to quality datasets is essential to enable Al-driven public service delivery, enhance governance, and promote social development and inclusive growth. Presently most of the public data is collected, stored and operated in silos. There is a lack of commonly accepted data definitions for various elements used in public data systems. This absence of semantic interoperability not only increases the cost and slows down Al solution development but also hampers domestic Al competitiveness.

DATA STANDARDS AND METADATA: DEFINITION

Data Standards are agreed upon terms for defining and sharing data. They specify how data should be structured, formatted, and used to ensure consistency, interoperability, and compatibility across systems. These standards promote uniform recording of information and is fundamental for efficient exchange of information between organizations, systems, and technological solutions, ensuring that the data is understandable and usable in a consistent way. Once data standards are established, the management of data, information, and knowledge becomes essential. Metadata serves this purpose.

Metadata is structured data about data. It provides additional information that describes the content, context, structure, and administration of data, making it easier to find, understand, and manage data resources effectively.

DATA STANDARDS AND METADATA IMPLEMENTATION: OBJECTIVE

The implementation of data standards and metadata across Ministries under the IndiaAl Mission is a foundational element in India's journey to becoming a global Al leader. This initiative will bring significant benefits, including:
