Almeida–Pineda recurrent backpropagation

Almeida-Pineda recurrent backpropagation is a supervised algorithm for neural networks that learn from mistakes. It was made by Luis B. Almeida and Fernando J. Pineda in 1987. It is a supervised learning method, meaning the desired outputs are known ahead of time. The network's job is to learn how to turn the inputs into the desired results.

In a recurrent network, unlike in a feedforward network, any neuron can connect to any other neuron in any direction. Moreover, Almeida–Pineda backpropagation algorithm can train recurrent neural networks with recurrent backpropagation. It is learning with a teacher present. For this algorithm, a recurrent neural network is of some input units, some output units, and in the end, some hidden units. For a given set of (input, target) states, the network is to settle into a stable activation state with the output units in the target state. This process is done by clamping a given input state on the input units.

Bootstrap aggregating

Bootstrap aggregating, also called bagging (from Bootstrap aggregating), is a machine learning ensemble meta-algorithm used to improve the stability and accuracy of machine learning algorithms used in statistical classification and regression. It also lowers the variation and keeps the model from being too good. So it is often with decision tree methods, but researchers can use it with any technique. The model-averaging process is in the case of bagging.

The techniques involve making a bootstrap sample of the training dataset for each ensemble member and training a decision tree model on each piece. The predictions are then combined directly using a statistic like the average of the predictions. One benefit of bagging is that it usually doesn't overfit the training dataset. The number of ensemble members can keep increasing until the performance on a holdout dataset stops improving. Moreover, this is a broad overview of the bagging ensemble method, but we can generalize it and pull out essential parts.

Diffusion map

Diffusion maps is a dimensionality reduction or feature extraction algorithm introduced by Coifman and Lafon. It computes a family of embeddings of a data set into (often low-dimensional) Euclidean space whose coordinates are from the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a diffusion operator applied to the data. The Euclidean distance between points in an embedded area corresponds to the "diffusion distance" between probability distributions centered on those points. In addition, Diffusion maps take advantage of the connection between Markov chains with random walks and heat diffusion. The fundamental finding is that if we randomly stroll through the data, it is more likely that we will arrive at a close data point than at a far-off one.

Diffusion maps belong to the family of nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods. Its focus is on uncovering the sampled data's underlying manifold. Diffusion maps provide a global dataset description by incorporating local similarities at various scales. The diffusion map algorithm is noise-resistant and computationally efficient compared to other methods. Moreover, the diffusion maps framework has been successfully used in complex networks, suggesting a different way of organizing networks beyond just topologically or structurally.
