A data centre is a centralised location with an infrastructure of networked computers and storage devices. They are there to offer open access to high-level computers, applications, and data. There are industry standards to help with designing, building, and maintaining data centre infrastructures and facilities to guarantee the data is highly available and safe.
With the recognition that data is essential to any organisation, statutory body, or individual, the Indian government has also introduced the Personal Data Protection Bill in parliament to protect Indian users' data.

The Indian telecom giant has become a significant player in outsourcing data centre infrastructure. Two of its hyper-scale data centres in India, with a combined capacity of 12.5 MW, will be erected in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 2019, the business also entered a 10-year deal with Microsoft to construct additional these around the country. AWS plans to create four smaller data centres across India over the next two years. These facilities will be located in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata. In addition, AWS plans to open 32 local zones in 26 countries over the next two years to facilitate quicker and safer networking. Cloud services and some use cases for video streaming, gaming, and applications requiring real-time feedback will be available at the regional hubs. These regional zones will provide the backbone for AWS regions, allowing the company to locate its computing, storage, database, and other services close to its users and businesses.
Equinix is a multinational corporation based in the United States that focuses on providing infrastructure for data centres and networking. It operates a network of more than 220 international business exchange (IBX) data centres in 63 major locations worldwide, making it the world's largest data centre and colocation provider. Unfortunately, Equinix has only two data centres in India, both located in Mumbai. However, the company's award-winning portfolio and stringent security measures have helped them earn a spot on the list of data centres in India in 2022.
The firm's goal is to create a digital ecosystem where the most prominent companies in each sector may interact with one another. Recently, Equinix announced plans to invest $86 million, including purchasing a 3.8-acre plot of land, to construct a third IBX data centre in Mumbai. This new project will allow Equinix to exponentially extend its ecosystem on the platform Equinix across India, contributing to India's booming digital economy.
