Besides the growing excitement surrounding Artificial Intelligence, India has emerged as a significant contributor in the process of shaping the global AI landscape. The AI index report 2023, published by Stanford Institute for Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence, has emphasised India’s role in the AI ecosystem. The report sheds light on India’s progress in AI research and development, with the share of Indian publications soaring from 1.3% in 2010 to a substantial 5.6% in 2021.

Nearly 1% of Indian researchers have participated in developing large language models like ChatGPT, now a prime example of technological wonder. These foundation models, which are trained with huge datasets, not only benefited AI to be more approachable but also opened the door to immense investments and innovations in the field. LinkedIn data shows India leads the highest AI skills in AI skill penetration as of 2022.

India is the global hub of AI

The Indian government is working meticulously on fostering an AI ecosystem in the country. According to reports, India is steering the innovation with programs aiming to “Make AI in India and Make AI work for India”. Furthermore, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has made strides in establishing a National Program on AI for implementing AI solutions under the program, AI for All which aims at AI inclusion and empowerment.

The government of India has rolled out various AI initiatives to stimulate AI development, focusing on building a better environment for AI research, innovation and implementation across the sector in the country.

Given below are a few of the AI innovations from India for the global AI ecosystem

  • AI for social impact: The damage caused due to natural calamities is unpreventable. Especially the ones caused by floods that cause significant damage to people and infrastructure. But there are ways by which we can reduce the impact of damage by leveraging the power of AI. Monitoring the river water level during rain by analysing the real-time river footage can be a significant benefit. A river analysis system gives alerts and forecasts to prevent flood damage in Japan. By leveraging an AI model built by engineers in India and Japan, it is accurately predicted to tackle emergencies and helps authorities take precautions.
  • Open-source contributions: Indian tech giants and service providers are finding their way to democratise AI by stepping up contributions to open source, as it is important to assist developers in creating innovative solutions to solve various challenges.
  • Industry 4.0: As most industries are on the run to accelerate digital transformation, it has underscored the need for mission-critical software that makes factory operational processes safer and scalable and drives continuous improvement. The potential of digital twin technology is significant, as it holds great potential in improving the safety of the workers on plant floors by gathering data from sensors and cameras and also enhancing worker safety.

Taking the lead on responsible AI

India has already dethroned the chair of global partnership in 2022, surpassing France. Our country is uniquely positioned to further global discussions on ethical and responsible AI usage, thereby building a solid approach to maximise social impact. Through the public-private partnership, India has launched a wide array of initiatives that are grounded in responsible AI principles to build more robust services with more advanced inclusion and empowerment.
