Recruitment with AI assistance has become a usual thing. People have been using AI tools to hire, shortlist and interview candidates for years. But one of the major challenges faced by that is the biases.

The Amazon AI recruiter incident in 2014 was a perfect example of gender bias. Amazon built an AI tool to screen the CVs, which made way to identify a loophole in the tool where it displayed a bias against women candidates. According to Analytics India Magazine, Instahyre, a New Delhi-based start-up company, is setting an example for tackling this AI bias by involving humans to double-check.

Battling the AI biases with humans

Being an AI-powered HR tech platform, Instahyre has been using technologies to help recruiters hire skilled employees easily. The founder and chief executive officer of Instahyre, Aditya Rajgarhia, believes that using AI that is not diverse or representative enough can lead to biases in recruitment. “This can result in unfair or discriminatory hiring practices, which can negatively impact the diversity and inclusivity of the workforce”, he added.

As a solution to this, Instahyre decided to employ an AI incorporated with human experts. “We have developed an AI-based platform which helps companies’ source, screen and match job candidates to suitable job roles. At the same time, Instahyre takes human feedback from recruiters of the companies using our platform based on their usage to ensure that they are not biased or discriminatory,” said Rajgarhia. Instahyre has also trained its AI model on a diverse range of data sets to lessen the biases in the hiring process. “We regularly audit our platform to identify and address any potential biases that may have been introduced” he added.

How InstaMatch works

Instahyre has developed the AI tool InstaMatch, which assists enterprises in hiring employees. This proprietary technology mimics a human recruiter and learns from the user’s actions. This helps in developing a model that can hire in businesses. The tool basically analyses the past and present employees in the company and identifies the types of businesses and industries from which the company usually hires. The corporate information is also utilised by this technology to generate a customised email which will be sent to candidates by this company’s recruiters. This mail will highlight the benefit of joining the company.

“The AI algorithm unifies all hiring segments and provides recruiters with smart inputs to assist them in creating a high-performance recruitment pipeline. The one solution automates the tedious hiring process and manages mass hiring for recruiters, including candidate sourcing, shortlisting and scheduling interviews”, said Rajgarhia.

He explained further that the tool carefully evaluates candidates through deliberate screening and assessment, shortlisting and scheduling them for interviews. It will also offer a rollout for the selected employees.

Evaluating the impact of Instahyre

The conventional method of hiring requires a considerable amount of time and money. Here Instahyre has reportedly saved a company’s time by 60-70% and cost by 3x. In addition, they have helped around 10,000 companies with their innovative recruitment services. Instahyre has more than 40 million candidates on the platform, including giants like Amazon, Google, Paypal, Paytm, PhonePe, Myntra etc.

Strengthening AI ethics is significant while addressing biases that AI causes. Proper usage of ethical principles in organisations can assure fairness, transparency and accountability in the hiring process while exploring the levels of AI use. “Ultimately, organisations need to ensure that they use AI for hiring ethically. Additionally, it is important to ensure privacy concerns and obtain informed consent from candidates before collecting and using their data,” he added.
