In today’s world, AI needs no introduction. The technology has touched all aspects of our daily lives which we thought was impossible before. AI has the potential to improve human life and businesses are racing against time to harness this power and reap benefits. The rise of AI, often termed as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is changing markets and workforces. Innumerable start-ups are mushrooming across all sectors like healthcare, BFSI, education and travel & hospitality to harness the true power and innovate so as to make lives easier and even more comfortable.

However, as we stand to witness the rise of machines, we also unknowingly observe the legal and ethical malfunctioning of the technology which is often beyond our imagination. Bias in AI and other negative consequences of the technology have become common, yet with limited solution. Responsible AI is designed to recognize and mitigate the potential biases that may stem from AI solutions during the process of implementation. It needs to be understood that simply eliminating the bias is not enough to avoid unwanted consequences, but designing an algorithm that actively identifies legal and ethical risks is important. However, responsible and ethical AI is a relatively new field with many start-ups still trying to figure out the ways and means to it. INDIAai, took this opportunity to present a handbook on mitigating biases in AI and the road towards it. At a time when knowledge is abundant, this handbook will come in handy for start-ups who would like to understand the concept and principles of responsible AI, the challenges faced in its adoption and the rules and regulations governing it.

The handbook is an effort to put in place a formalized framework for start-ups to encourage considerations of ethics, trust and unbiasedness. Even though the concept of Responsible AI is yet to be conquered, the handbook is a step towards achieving it. It promotes the idea that companies who choose to pursue and develop responsible AI is bound to benefit from it at various levels. In addition to this, it also features the findings from a start-up survey regarding biasedness in AI algorithms. The survey was conducted by INDIAai to have a better understanding of start-ups perspective on responsible AI and the steps they are taking to achieve it.

To add to this, the handbook also touches upon the latest concept of auditing AI applications, which is finding a lot of takers at present. Last, but not the least, there is a comparative analysis of the legal benchmarking systems for AI across different countries and how India can learn from it. Team INDIAai hopes that this handbook will act as a first step for start-ups towards understanding and implementing responsible AI.
