Meta unveiled its latest and most advanced Large Language Model (LLM), the Meta Llama 3. In addition, the company unveiled an image generator that dynamically refreshes images in real time as the user inputs the question. Meta will incorporate its most recent model into its exclusive virtual assistant, Meta AI.

Meta is positioning its current models as the most advanced AI models, surpassing competitors like Google and Mistral in performance and capability. The enhanced Meta AI assistant will seamlessly incorporate into many platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and a dedicated website similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Let's examine Meta's Llama 3 model's features and why Meta calls it their best.

Llama

Llama, or the Large Language Model, is a sophisticated artificial intelligence model designed to process and generate human-like text. Meta AI introduced a family of LLMs called Meta AI in February 2023. The initial iteration of the model was introduced in four different dimensions, namely 7B, 13B, 33B, and 65 billion parameters. The Llama's 13B model surpassed OpenAI's GPT-3, which has 135 billion parameters.

In essence, parameters in this context refer to the dimensions and intricacy of an AI model. A higher quantity of parameters indicates that an AI model is more intricate and potent. Meta launched Llama 2 in July of the previous year, a considerably enhanced iteration of its initial LLM. Llama 2 was published with three different parameter sizes: 7 billion, 13 billion, and 70 billion. Additionally, it was trained on 40% more data than its predecessor.

Llama 3

Meta has released Llama 3, the newest version of its LLM. It is being touted as the most advanced model ever, with notable performance and advancements in AI capabilities. The Llama 3, built on the Llama 2 framework, has been launched in two variants, one with 8B and 70B parameters. Both sizes are available in a standard model and an optimized version tailored to enhance performance in specific jobs. The instruction-tuned version is designed to provide the necessary power for AI chatbots intended to interact with users.

Meta claims that with Llama 3, they have developed open-source models that are comparable in quality to the top proprietary models currently available. Furthermore, it has adopted an open-source philosophy of releasing early and granting the development community, consisting of software developers, access to the models during their developmental stages.

Text-based models

Meta has made text-based models available within the Llama 3 collection of models. Nevertheless, the business intends to enhance Llama 3 by adding support for several languages and modes of interaction, allowing it to process lengthier contextual information. These improvements will be made while improving performance in various LLM capabilities, like coding and reasoning.

Evaluations

Meta said Llama 3 8B outperformed open-source AIs such as Mistral 7B and Gemma 7B in benchmark evaluations. Llama 3 demonstrated superior performance compared to Google's Gemma 7B, Mistral's Mistral 7B, and Anthropic's Claude 3 Sonnet in various benchmarks, including MMLU 5-shot (Massive Multitask Language Understanding), GPQA 0-shot (A Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A Benchmark), HumanEval 0-shot (a benchmark for evaluating the multilingual ability of code generative models), GSM-8K 8-shot, and Math 4-shot, CoT (maths and word problems).

Meta still needs to provide formal information regarding Llama 3's specific applications. Llama 3, comparable to other AI chatbots, can generate many types of writing, including poems, code, scripts, and musical compositions. It can also condense factual subjects and serve as a tool for language translation.

How to use Llama 3?

Meta announced the integration of Llama 3 into Meta AI, enabling its use on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the web. The LLM has been seamlessly incorporated into the Hugging Face environment, making it easily accessible for developers. It can also be accessed through Perplexity Labs, Fireworks AI, and cloud provider platforms like Azure ML and Vertex AI.

The Llama 3 models will be accessible through many platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Hugging Face, Databricks, Kaggle, IBM WatsonX, Microsoft Azure, NVIDIA NIM, and Snowflake.

Currently, Meta AI is accessible in English throughout the United States on the messaging platform WhatsApp. Meta also extends its presence to other countries, such as Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
