The Rise of Drone Threats

Al significant drone attack occurred at the Air Force Station in Jammu, India, on June 27, 2021. Situated about 14 km away from the India-Pakistan border, this airbase was hit by low-flying drones that deployed two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) causing damage to a building. This was probably the first drone attack on any defence establishment in the country, but since then there has been a significant increase in drone infiltrations across the border.

Drones serve multiple purposes, including both kinetic operations, such as military and civilian attacks, and non-kinetic operations, like smuggling counterfeit currency, drugs, small arms, and ammunition across the border.

The Border Security Force (BSF) of India, responsible for safeguarding the Indian side of the international border, reported over 268 drone sightings in 2022. This represents a substantial rise compared to 109 sightings in 2021 and 49 in 2020. The rapid increase in drone sightings indicates that Pakistan has adopted drones as a new strategic tool to gain an advantage in the border conflict with India. In the most recent incident in May 2023, the Border Security Force (BSF) successfully shot down a Pakistani drone carrying drugs along the international border in the Amritsar district. This marks the fifth drone attack in May 2023 alone. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the vulnerabilities associated with drone targets to prevent potential damage and ensure public safety.
