IndiaAI Safe & Trusted AI Projects Background  

IndiaAI, an Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), is the implementation agency of the IndiaAI Mission, which aims to democratize and catalyze the AI innovation ecosystem in the Country.

Within the mission, the ‘Safe & Trusted’ pillar emphasizes the need for a balanced, technology-enabled, and India-specific approach to AI governance. This involves the development of 25 indigenous technical tools, guidelines, frameworks, and standards that are contextualized to India’s unique challenges and opportunities as well as our social, cultural, linguistic, and economic diversity.  

To further this vision, the first Expression of Interest (EOI) round under the Safe & Trusted AI pillar was successfully completed on 16 October 2024, selecting eight projects from over 2,000 proposals. Continuing the goal of developing 25 indigenous tools and frameworks, the second EOI round was launched on 10 December 2024, inviting applications from India-based academic institutions, R&D organizations, government bodies, start-ups, and private sector companies across the following themes:  

• Watermarking & Labelling: Develop tools to authenticate AI-generated content, ensuring it’s traceable, secure, and free of harmful materials.  
• Ethical AI Frameworks: Establish AI frameworks that align with global standards, ensuring AI respects human values and promotes fairness.  
• AI Risk Assessment & Management: Create risk management tools and frameworks to enhance the safe deployment of AI in public services.  
• Stress Testing Tools: Create stress-testing tools to evaluate how AI models perform under extreme scenarios, detect vulnerabilities, and build trust in AI for critical applications.  
• Deepfake Detection Tools: Create Deepfake Detection Tools to enable real-time identification and mitigation of deepfakes, preventing misinformation and harm and ensuring a secure and trustworthy digital ecosystem.  

Second Webinar  

Building on the success of the first webinar, IndiaAI is pleased to announce its second webinar under IndiaAI Safe & Trusted AI Projects, titled “Understanding Industry and Academic Role Towards Building Safe & Trusted AI”, scheduled to take place on 4 February 2025, at 12:00 PM.  

Webinar Objectives  

• Evangelize the second ‘Expression of Interest (EOI) for Safe & Trusted AI Projects’ issued by IndiaAI,  
• Explore key considerations for incorporating safety as a core principle in developing and adopting AI solutions across sectors.
