Bias in AI is a genuine concern, and it is generating more attention. One of the more effective ways to address bias in AI is to engage diverse teams throughout the process. Women are very much underrepresented in AI and tech industry. According to a survey by World Economic Forum, women account for only 26% of data and AI positions in the workforce.  

To feature the contribution of women who have been doing exceptional work in AI and to understand what it means to be a leading woman in the field, INDIAai commenced the series Women in AI. In 2022, we interacted with several such women. Here we are retelling the stories of ten inspiring female AI experts.  

Apurva Madiraju: With over 14 years of industry experience, Apurva Madiraju is now one of the prominent names in India's AI ecosystem. She currently is the Vice President at Swiss Re- one of the world's leading providers of reinsurance, insurance and other forms of insurance-based risk transfers.

Dr. Jyoti Joshi: Dr. Jyoti Joshi is the founder and CEO of Kroop.ai. Kroop.ai is a deep tech startup that has developed a sophisticated audio-visual deep learning platform. She is a first-generation entrepreneur and an AI scientist with a PhD from the University of Canberra, Australia. She worked for mental health analysis and put in stints at the University of Waterloo, Canada and Monash University, Australia.

Ishu Jain: Ishu Jain is the Head of Central Analytics at Swiggy. She has over 16 years of diverse work experience delivering analytical insights in companies like Dell, Genpact, Fractal, Target and Swiggy for business entities across geographies. Over the years, she has evolved as a domain-agnostic analyst, a trusted Leader and a constant learner.

Mamta Aggarwal: Mamta Aggarwal is the VP - Head of AiDa (AI-ML Products & Platforms) - AI Labs, American Express. Prior to this, she held a pivotal position as the Managing Director of Global AI Hub, Accenture India. Mamta holds several research papers, patents and industry accolades in her name.

Supriya Singh Raman: With more than 16 years of experience, Supriya Singh Raman is a Data Scientist proficient in designing and developing statistical and predictive machine learning models for identifying patterns and extracting data insights. Currently, she is Vice President - Data Science - Corporate & Investment Banking at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Suriya Prabha: Suriya Prabha is the founder of Youcode, an NGO that works to teach AI to students in Indian villages. Her vision was to work towards building an India with technologically self-reliant villages and a technically sound generation. Suriya Prabha formed a team of six, which included her husband and a few graduate students. Under her leadership, they founded Youcode in the year 2018.
