India hosted the 6th GPAI Ministerial Council meeting on July 3, 2024, as a part of the GPAI mid-year Summit. At this summit, the members drew consensus on a renewed vision for GPAI. They announced an integrated partnership with the OECD - bringing together all current OECD members and GPAI countries on equal footing, under the GPAI brand. Encompassing 44 countries now, GPAI remains committed to the responsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence, guided by principles of human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth.

As the Co-Chair of GPAI, India, previously hosted the GPAI Summit in New Delhi last year. This summit was a pivotal moment for GPAI, during which the New Delhi Ministerial Declaration was adopted, reaffirming the commitment of 29 member countries to promoting responsible AI development and deployment. In line with the 2023 Ministerial Declaration, two new thematic areas were introduced: Sustainable Agriculture and Collaborative AI for Global Partnership (CAIGP). Throughout its presidency, India organised multiple convenings focused on the thematic priorities of GPAI.

In continuation of its role, India is organising a Virtual Convening on Climate Change and AI. This session aims to convene the new membership of GPAI, discuss GPAI’s role in enabling the development and deployment of AI-driven solutions to address the urgent challenges of climate change and explore how AI can contribute to sustainable and inclusive growth globally.

GPAI Convening on Climate Change and AI

Building on the insights from our recent domestic consultation on Climate Change and AI, this global convening seeks to address key challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI and climate action. The domestic consultation highlighted the need for high-quality, localised data, the importance of bottom-up engagement, and the role of international cooperation in enhancing AI's impact on climate change.

Out of the three key themes identified, we believe it is crucial to address the theme of Data Quality and Accessibility, as it remains a significant global issue impacting all regions, particularly in the context of AI-driven solutions. This convening shall specifically focus on the need for reliable, high-resolution data essential for training AI models. Participants will discuss best practices for data generation, storage, and sharing, especially for satellite and geospatial data. It will also address existing barriers to data access, particularly for countries in the Global South, and explore policies to encourage open data initiatives for climate action.

Expected Outcomes:

1. Apprising the members of the efforts concerning climate change and AI so far

2. Identifying renewed expertise and capabilities under GPAI-OECD towards enabling responsible development and use of AI to manage and mitigate climate change in developing countries

3. A clear understanding of specific opportunities for collaboration among GPAI- OECD member countries in using AI for climate action, including data sharing, research partnerships, and joint projects.

4. A commitment from GPAI-OECD members to explore and implement sustainable AI practices, focusing on reducing AI's carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency in AI infrastructure.

5. A set of initial recommendations on improving access to high-quality, localised climate data, along with potential frameworks for cross-border data sharing among GPAI members.
