Recently, Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal rolled out Krutrim, a 'made in India' large language model and generative AI platform on the lines of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. The platform is developed and owned by Krutrim Si Design, Aggarwal's AI project. It is trained on 2 trillion tokens or pieces of textual information, having the most significant representation of Indian data.
According to the founder, Krutrim is India's own AI. The company has announced its availability for public testing. He also stated that the initial iteration of the product will undergo substantial enhancements as the company focuses on expanding its foundation.
Krutrim means artificial in Sanskrit and comes in base and pro models. Like ChatGPT, this primary version can respond to prompts or queries from the public. It can comprehend around 22 Indian languages and generate text in 10 languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam. Krutrim Pro is a larger model for solving complex problems, which the company is expected to launch between January and March.
Krutrim is currently accessible to people in batches through simple signup, and the company will open it for all users by January 2024. Additionally, developers can access Krutrim APIs for innovation and experimentation starting February 2024.
The model aims to empower each of the 1.4 billion+ Indian consumers, developers, entrepreneurs, and enterprises by giving them the power of AI.
Unlike other large language models like ChatGPT, Krutrim is specific to India. The model trained over 2 trillion tokens and has a large representation of Indic language tokens in the training data. It has support for all 22 scheduled languages. The model has generation capabilities for Hindi, English, and 8 Indian languages. All languages will be available in Q1 2024.
The language barrier is one of the significant challenges in India. At this initial stage, the capability of the model to cater to Indian needs is certainly commendable. The model has voice-enabled Generative AI applications to serve the AI needs of all Indians. Krutrim has an Indian ethos natively. It generates text with an innate sense of Indian cultural sensibilities and relevance.
According to the performance analysis of Krutrim, it stands out from Llama 2 in various features.
As per the Ola founder, the model will "hallucinate"- a term used for AI chatbots when they generate fabricated information in response to a user's prompt but present it as factual and correct.
Aggarwal is confident that Krutrim is starting a new era in our nation's AI computing stack. They aim to innovate alongside the world and define future paradigms. He believes that AI can potentially transform our economic and cultural lives; hence, he says India should create AI technology rather than rely on Western products.
