Four years ago, I embarked on my AI journey, where my team and I initially focused on developing a set of services to support system engineering teams with traditional AI and ML models. As technology has advanced, we began embracing modern approaches like Large Language Models (LLMs). The rapid evolution in this area keeps me excited about staying abreast of market innovations. Over time, our projects have evolved into a comprehensive suite of AI tools that cover the entire engineering lifecycle. My primary aim is to incorporate these AI services into daily operations throughout the organization to improve productivity, efficiency, and decision-making capabilities.
Collaborating with teams across multiple locations made me realize that automating numerous tasks would enable us to focus on more innovative projects. At that time, my routine tasks felt constricting and limited my growth. However, after getting an opportunity to join the AI department, I have encountered many learning opportunities. We began with conventional machine learning models and natural language processing (NLP) techniques and have now advanced to working with large language models (LLMs).
I value the daily learning experiences and AI's remarkable capabilities in analyzing extensive datasets, revealing valuable insights, and facilitating informed decision-making, which supports timely and accurate choices.
AI is rapidly transforming industries globally, making it crucial for India to cultivate a skilled workforce adept in AI technologies. A significant gap exists between the demand for AI talent and the available talent pool in India. Equipping individuals with relevant AI skills can boost employment opportunities, fortifying India's stand in the global economy.
Proficiency in collaborating with AI and utilizing generative technologies will be essential, as these skills enhance the creativity and problem-solving abilities needed in a digital world. Embracing ongoing learning will help the workforce adapt to technological progress and foster innovation, positioning India as a global leader.
I began my career as a software test engineer. In the software industry, there is a common misconception that testing is an easy job requiring minimal effort. In reality, a good tester must thoroughly understand the product to ensure its quality and functionality.
Balancing career and motherhood presented unique challenges for me as a woman. After my maternity leave for my first child, I returned to work and immediately faced a demanding project. It required immense effort to balance the responsibilities of motherhood and the rigours of a challenging project, pushing me to prove my capabilities in both areas.
In recent years, my professional journey has included a steep learning curve as I transitioned from a Verification and Validation (V&V) leader to an AI product leader. This progression has been demanding and, at times, exhausting. Making a mark in diverse environments and domains is highly challenging and requires continuous growth and adaptation. Each new role and project has demanded that I dig deeper and find new strengths within myself.
Women are increasingly stepping into diverse roles, bringing unique perspectives that drive creativity and innovation. Their varied backgrounds enhance their understanding of complex issues and push AI development beyond traditional limits. Companies should create gender-neutral job descriptions and actively recruit women through targeted outreach and partnerships with women-in-tech organizations. Companies must foster an inclusive culture by addressing unconscious bias, offering mentorship, and ensuring equal career advancement through training, leadership development, and clear progression pathways. Regular training of employees to address biases in hiring, promotions, and evaluations, as well as establishing networks and support groups for women in AI, becomes equally important.
Thanks to the trailblazers who came before us, women in India have made remarkable strides in breaking stereotypes. To continue this progress, young girls aspiring to build careers in AI should focus on education and professional growth. Creating supportive environments at home and work is crucial, as is fostering active allyship between men and women to challenge societal constraints. Visible role models who have overcome similar hurdles can offer powerful inspiration.
Young girls aspiring to careers in AI must embrace curiosity and commit to continuous learning to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving field. They must remain resilient in the face of challenges, viewing them as opportunities for growth. Active networking through community engagements, events, and collaboration in projects. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your potential. Confidence and trust in your abilities are key; your passion and dedication will drive your success.
