Road accidents are the leading cause of death among people in the 5-29 age group worldwide, and the tenth leading cause of death universally. India alone accounts for 5 lakh road accidents every year, one of the highest in the world, in which about 1.5 lakh people die and another 3 lakh become crippled.
Traffic violations, lack of law enforcement, rapid urbanisation and lack of infrastructure are the primary reasons that make driving on Indian roads an unsafe and unpleasant experience. DeepTech startup Nayan Technologies aims to solve road monitoring and traffic issues by implementing artificial intelligence through the citizens of the city. The goal is to make cities smart and safe while simultaneously providing digital employment to the lower income groups.
The video feeds are analysed using sophisticated AI algorithms to provide near real-time monitoring of traffic and infrastructure of the city. The information thus collated is used to provide drivers with advance alerts about their route and commute. A decentralised model ensures that roads are constantly monitored for safety and infrastructural issues. Live statistics about traffic violations across many cities In India and abroad can also be tracked from Nayan's official website. Their transport and smart mobility solutions can be used for smart city planning, travel route planning, accident claim settlements, insurance leads, women’s safety and crime vigilance.
With 1000 violations detected per hour and over 50,000 catastrophic issues reported, the AI engine Nayan is delivering very encouraging results. The startup is supporting over 100 families by providing daily income as digital workers to people from lower income groups.
By facilitating roadways monitoring through inexpensive smartphones, Nayan’s technology helps to reduce operation costs for expensive cameras and radars. Beneficiaries of Nayan’s B2B SaaS offering include road transport authorities, insurance companies, private aggregators and public transportation fleets.
Nayan has entered into strategic partnerships with various government departments in India, such as Delhi Police, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It also counts Dubai Police as an important international partner.
Nayan’s model for AI-driven monitoring of infrastructure, roads and traffic can be implemented in any city in any country as road safety is a global issue. The use of data & technology to improve sustainability and economic development can be a powerful tool for smart city planning.
