At GE, Artificial Intelligence (AI) development is primarily focused on connecting minds and industrial machines to enable intelligent and user-friendly products and services that move, cure and power the world. GE Research spearheads this charter via the invention and deployment of AI solutions that can execute on industrial devices, at the edge or in the cloud.

AI research is practiced as a multidisciplinary exercise at GE, where insights from data-driven machine learning is fused with domain-specific knowledge drawn from areas such as materials, physics, biology and design engineering, to amplify the quality as well as causal-veracity of the predictions derived — what they call hybrid AI.

Focus Areas Include:

  • Human System Interaction: Human System Interaction (HSI), or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), focuses on the design, research and development of interfaces between people and systems such as computers. HSI and HCI are multi-disciplinary fields involving computer science, behavioral science, design technology and other related fields of study.
  • Knowledge Management & Big Data: To enable machines to capture and benefit from this domain expertise, GE Research uses semantic web technology to model, digitize, reason and learn from human knowledge. In addition, we draw upon deep domain expertise in natural language processing and text mining to extract knowledge from unstructured sources, and our expertise in Big Data and cloud computing technologies to simplify the management of data and accelerate analytics.
  • Machine Learning: Machine Learning technologies are critical to the design, manufacture, management and improvement of modern industrial assets. At GE Research we are infusing advanced Machine Learning algorithms into all aspects of GE's industrial portfolio to enable superior product design and more intelligent asset management.
  • Computer Vision: At GE Research, fundamental and applied computer vision technology research is performed using a plethora of tools and techniques to tackle various problems. From classical image processing and computer vision techniques that have proven their effectiveness over the years to emerging AI technologies such as Deep Learning—we use the tools that befit the job.
