New unit formed by RBI to track AI and Blockchain

In August 2018, RBI announced that it has formed a new unit to track emerging technologies such as cryptocurrency, blockchain, and AI. The unit will be using data analytics with the aid of new technologies for predicting different RBI functions such as inflation targeting, banking regulations, and policy enforcement. The RBI has formed this unit to research and supervise disruptive technologies and possibly draft rules in the future.

Project Insight

Project Insight is a tax tracker which has been built over a period of seven years at a cost of around Rs 1000 crore. The project leverages data mining techniques and analyzed the data to achieve its objective of a corruption-free country. It uses AI and ML to find patterns and trends in bank accounts. The tracker allow government to collate databases of IT forms, IT returns, TDS/TCS statements and Statement of Financial Transactions received from financial institutions. With this project, the IT department is planning to collect information from a variety of sources including social media channels such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.


The initial plan of this project was announced in July 2016 by the Finance Ministry, and first phase was expected to be launched in May 2017. The government contracted L&T Infotech to build the tax tracker.

Drone Shakti to commercialize Indian markets

Drone Shakti, a new initiative that will commercialize the use of drones in different industries, will be promoted with the help of startups, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Budget 2022 speech. She stressed that the initiative will also help establish Drones-As-A-Service. Sitharaman said that the required courses needed to upskill people on the use of drone technology will be started. While talking about agricultural development, Sitharaman said that the use of 'kisan drones' will be promoted for crop assessment, digitization of land records, and spraying of insecticides and nutrients. 

MCA 3.0

Ministry of Corporate Affairs

In May 2021, The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) launched a new version of its portal, MCA 21, version 3.0. It will leverage the use of the latest technologies like data analytics, AI, and ML, to simplify regulatory filings for companies. This was done to promote the ease of doing business and compliance monitoring. “The MCA21 V3.0 will not only improve the existing services and modules, but will also create new functionalities like e-adjudication, compliance management system, advanced helpdesk, feedback services, user dashboards, self-reporting tools, and revamped master data services.”
