About

Ayushman Bharat Yojana (ABY) is a central government-funded free healthcare coverage scheme. The scheme is focused on nearly 11 crore poor and vulnerable families in rural and urban India. It is the largest scheme of its kind in the world. ABY envisions a two-pronged, unified approach by both government and private hospitals, to provide a comprehensive healthcare on primary, secondary and tertiary levels. This is planned to be accomplished through Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). 


Funding: Rs 6400 crore for the year 2020-21 for PM-JAY

More Information

AI technology along with the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) can help the ABY aim to improve delivery of healthcare services from storing patient information, early detection, to giving real-time insights for research and predicting outcomes, helping in diagnosis and better decision making. In addition, the government aims at employing following tech-based initiatives to improve healthcare where AI has a scope of playing a crucial role:


  • the National eHealth Authority is aimed at helping with eHealth adoption, by laying down standards and a holistic framework for the health sector. This will help promote e- health exchanges between government and private hospitals under the scheme,
  • the Integrated Health Information Program aims to consolidate and provide electronic health records – medical history, diagnosis, medications – to all citizens oan-India
  • the Electronic Health Record Standards for India
