Ahmedabad has reportedly emerged as the first Indian city to employ Artificial Intelligence for diverse monitoring by municipal corporations and police across the whole city. Paldi is now a hub of AI-enabled command and control centre, featuring a sensational nine by 3-metre screen that oversees a substantial 460 square kilometres encompassing Ahmedabad and its surroundings. The AI-based surveillance system includes live drone footage and camera feeds from various traffic signals and buses, which offers a six-camera view that observes the entire city.  

As per CNBC Awaaz, the AI system can monitor and address various issues beyond its abilities, such as tracking traffic violations or unidentified activities. This AI-driven system can locate missing people to identify suspicious activities. This system is expected to be a boon for both municipal corporations and the police of Ahmedabad city.  

The role of AI in this surveillance system is crucial as it monitors the incoming footage in real-time. AI handles tasks efficiently, like analysing live and recorded footage to find significant information.  

The integrated use of drones aids in surveillance by assisting in spotting issues like illegal parking, stalls, garbage accumulation and various other civic problems. The combination of drone footage and AI analysis helps promptly identify and resolve these issues.  

One of the significant instances is the effective management of stray animals in Ahmedabad city. The AI control room was pivotal in managing the issue as stray animals were identified, captured and later returned to their owners. The AI-powered system also aids immediate responses to incidents, promises timely actions, and sometimes provides penalties for the offenders.  

The people in Ahmedabad have reported a feeling of safety and noticed improvements in traffic management and overall cleanliness after implementing the AI-based system. The Ahmedabad city serves as a beacon of progress by showcasing how technology like AI can contribute to the overall development and safety of urban areas in India.
