Supreme Court judge Hima Kohli has stated that AI has been a “game-changer” in the legal field and has the power to transform the way lawyers work. She noted that technology played a key role in keeping the wheels of justice turning even during the peak of the Covid pandemic and beyond.

Justice Kohli was speaking about ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Legal Sector’ at a function organized by a private bank. In her opinion, AI should not be viewed as a threat as it is an opportunity to enhance the quality of legal practice.

Justice Hima Kohli cautioned about ethical concerns such as “accountability, transparency and protection of rights of parties’, which may crop up with the use of AI in the legal profession. However, she stated that they are aware of the ethical concerns that come with the use of artificial intelligence in courts.

The advent of AI has been a concern among the legal fraternity. Lawyers fear that their expertise and skills will become redundant due to technology. But Justice Kohli is confident that while AI has the potential to improve the efficiency of the judicial system, it can never supplant human judgement.

AI’s strength will be valuable in improving the efficiency of legal practice by automating routine tasks, reducing the time required for legal research and providing real-time access to information.
