An autonomous AI-enabled weeder by a Seattle-based company Carbon Robotics is the weed terminator that has waged a war on weeds.

According to the Carbon Robotics website, the robot "leverages robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and laser technology to safely and effectively drive through crop fields to identify, target and eliminate weeds."

"Unlike other weeding technologies, the robots utilize high-power lasers to eradicate weeds through thermal energy, without disturbing the soil. The automated robots allow farmers to use fewer herbicides and reduce labour to remove unwanted plants while improving the reliability and predictability of costs, crop yield, and more."

Traditionally, weeds were pulled out by hand but as it's getting difficult to find humans who would do the tedious, mindless job, robots are poised to take up the challenge. The autonomous weeder uses 12 cameras to study the soil underneath it. The AI algorithm then ascertains the dangerous weeds and then targets them with a carbon dioxide laser to eliminate them.

The weeder can laser out 100,000 weeds per hour and can clear up to 20 acres of farms in a day as compared to human labourers who would average 1 acre a day and would have taken weeks to match up to the weeder.

While the weeder's been all sold out for 2021, it is not cheap. It is estimated to cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars"! But that doesn't seem to damp its popularity as the next lot will only be available in 2022!
