Traffic violations in Himachal Pradesh will soon be regulated via artificial intelligence as the police plan to catch motorists riding without helmets through a video analytics software. In a tender released by the state, bids have been invited to developed two AI based softwares to detect helmets and read number plates, as reported by Medianama.

For the purpose of traffic surveillance, the software will connect to upto 10,000 CCTV cameras. It requires to be able to detect a helmet, on the driver or pillion rider, of a size as small as '40 by 40 pixels' in the camera, while differentiating the target clearly from any distractions in the footage, such as pedestrians, rickshaws etc. During the day, the desired detection rate is 95-100%.

Further, the AI model should be able to detect number plates during the day and night. In addition to detection, the software should also be able to look up the number plate from a database and create an alert.

In its tender, the state police defines the scope, accuracy, and additional capabilities of the AI model. It further specifies a single app and web-based interface for the software system.
