The Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, a UNESCO Heritage Site, are a treasure trove of wondrous paintings and sculptures, considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, from the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. However, the treasure, like everything, are suffering at times of hand from neglect.

However, the ancient caves are set to get a new lease of life as the Mumbai-headquartered Sapio Analytics, a data management company is employing modern technology to restore and preserve the paintings of the cave.

The organisation is making these efforts in tandem with global efforts to preserve ancient culture and art. The paintings' digitised forms will be preserved on the Svalbard island in Norway under the Arctic World Archive.

The Ajanta paintings will be saved alongside other heritage treasures of the world such as manuscripts from the Vatican library, political histories, masterpieces from different eras, scientific breakthroughs and contemporary culture treasures.

Sapio Analytics, which has operations in the UK and the US's Silicon Valley have used a dataset of reference work to develop the AI mannequin, called Ancient AI for the work.

Balkrishna Choolun, Indian-origin co-founder of Ajantahc and chairman of UITV, based in London said, "We believe that this is India's century, and our cultural history should be available to the world."
