The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Centre of Excellence (CoE) has collaborated with Wadhwani AI on the 'Make AI in India' vision. Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan recently announced the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs) focused on Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities. AIIMS will lead the CoE on healthcare.
Commenting on the announcement, Nakul Jain, Director of Products and Design at Wadhwani AI, said, "We strongly believe in India's ability to lead in AI innovation. With the right talent, ecosystem, and data, India can be at the forefront of AI applications. This CoE is a step toward that vision, and we are excited to shape it alongside AIIMS Delhi."
Wadhwani AI supported the development of multiple AI solutions for screening diabetic retinopathy, pulmonary, and skin conditions. The AIIMS CoE, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will now scale these solutions across primary and secondary healthcare settings to ensure timely care for all.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness, especially in India, where access to specialized eye care is limited, particularly in rural regions. Many individuals are unaware of their condition until severe vision loss occurs. Wadhwani AI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health's eHealth division, has developed an AI solution to detect DR at its early stages. This solution empowers optometrists and field investigators to screen patients, enabling early diagnosis and referral to specialists at AIIMS or tertiary care centres.
Chest X-rays (CXRs) are one of the most widely used medical imaging tools due to their low cost and accessibility, accounting for nearly 40% of all scans. CXRs are essential for detecting a wide range of diseases, serving as an initial screening tool. Wadhwani AI is developing AI models to automate chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation, acting as an extra set of eyes to help radiologists prioritize urgent cases, enhance accuracy, and support timely decision-making. Wadhwani AI is working with AIIMS Delhi to expand the study to cover multiple pulmonological conditions.
