OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been sweeping internet trends ever since it launched. The chatbot has grabbed the minds of people and has become the talk of the town. However, the creator is thinking way beyond AI. In his recent blog post, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, talks about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He says if it is successfully created, “this technology can elevate humanity by increasing abundance, turbocharging the global economy, and aiding in the discovery of new scientific knowledge that changes the limits of possibility.”
Altman believes that AGI has the potential to give everyone incredible new capabilities which enable everyone to have access to help with every cognitive task by providing a greater force multiplier for human ingenuity and creativity. While discussing the possibilities AGI could bring the world, he also makes us aware that AGI could bring serious risks, drastic accidents and social disruption. He says, “it is because the upside of AGI is so great, we do not believe it is possible or desirable for society to stop its development forever; instead, society and the developers of AGI have to figure out how to get it right.”
Altman says through developing AGI; they want it to be “an amplifier of humanity”. They aim to share the benefits, access and governance of AGI equally all over the globe. Also, they want to navigate massive risks. Altman is of the opinion that a gradual transition to a world of AGI is always better than a sudden one as “it gives people, policymakers, and institutions time to understand what is happening, personally experience the benefits and downside of these systems, adapt our economy, and to put regulation in place. It also allows for society and AI to co-evolve, and for people collectively to figure out what they want while the stakes are relatively low,” he said. He says, “successfully transitioning to a world with superintelligence is perhaps the most important-and hopeful and scary-project in human history.”
