According to a factsheet by White House, the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing new actions that will further promote responsible American innovation in Artificial Intelligence, considering the people’s rights and safety. The immediate decision build on the Administration’s robust leadership to make sure that the technology enhances the lives of the American people and will be breaking new ground in the federal government’s ongoing effort to advance a comprehensive approach towards AI-related risks and opportunities.

AI is one of the most powerful technologies currently; in order to seize the opportunities, we should mitigate the risks beforehand. President Biden made it clear that, regarding AI, we should prioritise people and communities by enhancing responsible innovation that serves the public good, balancing it with protecting society, security and the economy. This also suggests that companies have a fundamental responsibility to ensure their offered products are safe to use before they get deployed.

Vice President Harris and senior Administration officials were expected to have a meeting soon with CEOs of four American companies, including Alphabet, Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI, in the context of AI innovation. The meet was scheduled to analyse the responsibility and emphasise the significance of responsible, trustworthy and ethical innovation with the safeguards that mitigate risks and potential harms towards individuals and society. The meeting is intended to be a broader and ongoing effort to engage with companies, advocates, researchers, civil rights organisations, non-profit organisations, communities, international partners and others focusing on critical AI issues.

The considerable steps taken by the Administration to promote responsible innovation includes the landmark Blueprint for an AI Bill of Right and related executive actions announced last year, as well as the AI Risk Management Framework and a roadmap for standing up a National AI Research Resource which was made public earlier this year.

The Administration upholds actions to protect Americans in the era of AI. According to reports, President Biden signed an executive order in February which advised federal agencies to mitigate the bias in their design and use of technologies like AI in order to protect the public from algorithmic bias and discrimination.

Recently, the Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division together announced a joint statement highlighting their collective commitment to leverage the existing legal authorities to safeguard American people from AI-related risks.

The Administration is also reportedly working on addressing the national security concerns caused by AI, mainly in sensitive areas like safety, cybersecurity and biosecurity. It includes recruiting the support of government cybersecurity experts all across the national security community to make sure that all the leading AI companies have access to practices that includes the protection of AI models and networks.
