The BRICS alliance has officially established a study committee dedicated to exploring and analyzing AI.

During the BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, a gathering of prominent developing economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed the desire to establish an 'AI study group' among the member nations of BRICS. 

The primary objective of this effort is to rigorously observe and assess the advancements and evolution of AI technologies. One of the primary objectives of the AI study group is to stimulate and facilitate innovation in the field of AI across the member countries of the BRICS alliance. Additional information regarding the project is expected to be disclosed in the foreseeable future.

The Chinese President emphasized establishing a solid framework for AI governance and standardization to improve AI technology's security, dependability, control, and equity.

During his address at the 15th BRICS Summit, the President of the People's Republic of China emphasized the need to empower the Study Group to fulfil its complete potential. He further advocated for the expansion of collaboration in the field of AI and the intensification of information sharing and technological cooperation among the member countries. We must collaboratively address potential hazards and establish comprehensive AI governance frameworks and standards that are widely agreed upon. It will enhance AI technology's security, reliability, manageability, and fairness.

Other digital topics on the agenda include:

  • Cooperation on Remote Sensing Satellites: Plans call for developing a BRICS Global Remote Sensing Satellite Data and Application Cooperation Platform for agriculture, ecological conservation, and disaster mitigation.
  • China plans to establish "a research and technology incubator of a new era for BRICS countries to assist breakthroughs in scientific and technological advancements."
  • Sustainable development: Parties have agreed to establish a BRICS Framework for Industrial Cooperation for Sustainable Development, which will be aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Collaboration in digital education: A proposal to broaden education collaboration, including vocational and digital education systems, was given.
  • The focus is on the digital economy: During a BRICS summit plenary session, President Xi Jinping urged practical cooperation in the digital economy, ecological growth, and supply chains.
