Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the cabinet approved the India AI mission with a budget outlay of Rs 10,372 crore for five years as a significant step towards encouraging the Development of Artificial intelligence in India. The announcement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s various references to AI developments in India and how India can be a huge contributor in the AI space. The approved corpus will be used to create a large computing infrastructure.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, the minister said that the supercomputing capacity, comprising over 10,000 GPUs, will be made available to various stakeholders to create an AI ecosystem. Goyal said that startups, academia, researchers, and industry will be given access to the AI supercomputing infrastructure established under the India AI Mission. A National Data Management Officer will be set up under the mission to coordinate with various government departments and ministries to improve the quality of data and make it available for AI development and deployment.

The press release revealed that IndiaAI mission will further the vision of Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India. The mission seeks to showcase to the international community the positive applications of cutting-edge technology for societal benefit, leading to India’s global competitiveness.
