China introduced AI-enabled ‘Smart Courts’ to recommend laws and draft legal documents. Judges will be consulting with AI before delivering the final verdict. The Smart Court SoS is connected to the desk of every working judge across the country. According to Xu Jianfeng, the head of the information center of China’s Supreme People’s Court in Beijing, the application of this system has made a significant contribution to the judicial advancement of human civilization.

The ML system is capable of scanning court cases for references, recommending laws and regulations, drafting legal documents and rectifying human errors in the verdict.

The smart court system was introduced six years ago as a database in the country. If the judge disagrees with the recommendation provided by the machine, they must submit a written explanation to the machine for recording and auditioning. AI in court has reportedly reduced a judge’s workload by over a third and saved 1.7 billion working hours for Chinese citizens from 2019 to 2021.

China has prioritized AI as part of its five-year plan. Other technologies include quantum information, brain science, semiconductors, genetic research and biotechnology, clinical medicine and health, deep space, deep sea and polar exploration.

Apart from the judiciary, China is widely applying AI for military purposes. In March, a team of Chinese researchers claimed to have developed an AI that can design hypersonic weapons autonomously. There is also a lot of research in China to incorporate AI into combat systems. In June, military researchers of China claimed to have developed AI technology for an air defense system against hypersonic glide vehicles.

This new AI-powered air defense system can reportedly predict the potential kill trajectory of a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) and launch a counterattack within 3 minutes advance time. According to experts, the Chinese are outpacing the US in applying AI to its military, particularly the Air Force.

Earlier this year, they were said to have developed an AI-based system that can train unmanned combat drones to dogfight manned fighter jets a thousand times faster than the US. A Chinese PLA Central Theatre Commanded Air Force simulated a dogfight in which an experienced pilot was knocked down by an AI-enabled aircraft.
