An AI-powered traffic management system was launched at Merces junction recently. The system is capable of helping state authorities with security, signal management, and the issue of challans. The technology automatically detects violations and dispatches an e-challan to the violator’s house.

According to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, this is the first signal in Goa with AI intelligence. He said the system would also benefit traffic police by monitoring traffic and helping with security.

There will be 16 smart signals aimed at managing traffic in Goa. It will be possible to bring down major accidents in the city. The system will also be used to keep track of the movement of anti-social elements. The CM stated that the AI would be used to make any arrests in the future.

The system has been developed and implemented by Beltech AI and deployed at the Merces junction on a PPP basis. Goa shall expand the scope of implementation on a PPP basis by collaborating with private investment. The signals have been installed at no cost to the state government. Rs 40 lakh has been invested by the company, and revenue earned will be shared 70:30.

CM also warned people against breaking the rules or taking the law into their own hands. Transport minister Mauvin Godingo said that while the implementation of the system has begun, the process of issue challenge will be done by April 15.

With the AI system, there will not be any human error or scope for RTO or traffic police to be biased towards anyone. There will be real-time photographs if someone violates the traffic rules.

PWD minister Nilesh Cabral said AI tech is much more advanced than normal technology. Therefore, within the next 15 years, more locations will be taken up for AI monitoring of roads under the PPP model.
