Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai is calling for governments to regulate AI around the world. Pichai argues that AI technology should be prevented from using it to "support mass surveillance or violate human rights."

Writing in the Financial Times, Sundar Pichai stated that there are "real concerns about the potential negative consequences of AI" and "there will inevitably be more challenges ahead that no one company or industry can solve alone." According to Pichai, application of AI for deepfakes to nefarious uses of facial recognition, are all seen as the potentially harmful consequence of AI.

Recently the EU and US have stared developing regularity framework for AI, while companies like IBM and Google has also advocated for the same. However, he calls for an international corporation in framing global standards on AI regulations.

"There is no question in my mind that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated," writes Pichai. "The only question is how to approach it," he added.

This is not the first time that Google has advocated for regulatory measures for AI's use and development. In 2018 Google announced its AI principles as a potential framework for government regulation, which provides guidelines for tech companies for ensuring artificial intelligence technologies should be unbiased and must contribute to the greater social good.

On the other hand, many critics point out that by starting the dialogue on AI regulation, 'the big tech' is trying to dictate the terms of future regulation in their favour.
