The fourth edition of the annual AI Index Report has been published this week by Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence (HAI). The report is supplemented by raw data and an interactive Global AI Vibrancy Tool.
The AI Index Report tracks, collates, distils, and visualises data related to artificial intelligence. Its mission is to provide unbiased, rigorously vetted, and globally sourced data for policymakers, researchers, executives, journalists, and the general public to develop intuitions about the complex field of AI. The report aims to be the world’s most credible and authoritative source for data and insights about AI.
The report is organised into seven chapters, namely: Research and Development, Technical Performance, The Economy, AI Education, Ethical Challenges of AI Applications, Diversity in AI, and AI Policy and National Strategies. The 2021 AI Index also shows the effects of COVID-19 on AI development from multiple perspectives.
* The Inclusion pillar has been created to highlight the importance of diversity in the AI field. Currently, the pillar only includes gender metrics for 2020 due to the lack of data, but the aim is to include more measures in future reports.
The Global AI Vibrancy Tool offers an interactive visualisation when comparing up to 26 countries across 22 indicators. The tool provides transparent evaluation of the relative position of countries based on users’ preference, identifies relevant national indicators to guide policy priorities at a country level, and shows local centres of AI excellence for not just advanced economies but also emerging markets.
India has been placed at the sixth position, thanks to the addition of 'Inclusion' as a pillar this year. This pillar has been created to highlight the importance of diversity in the AI field. Remarkably, India ranks first in the two indicators that comprise the Inclusion parameter: Unique Occupations (Female) and Skill Penetration (Female). The interactive tool can be accessed here.
The AI Index was conceived within the One Hundred Year Study on AI, or AI100, which is a 100-year effort to study and anticipate how the effects of artificial intelligence will ripple through every aspect of how people work, live and play. Read the complete AI Index 2021 report here.
