India is among the top 10 nations in the world when it comes to technological advancement and financial support in artificial intelligence (AI), according to findings from a Brookings Institution study. The country's efforts in terms of investment and expenditure on AI made by the public, governmental initiatives, as well as private institutes and organisations, have been recognised for the ranking; However, in terms of commercial and research initiatives, India has grounds to cover.

According to the study, while India has increased adoption of new-gen technologies across all sectors consistently, India has another added advantage - funding. The study recognises this advantage which will help India leverage fast AI innovations and predicts that India will overtake nations such as Canada and South Korea in terms of AI achievements.

The nations leading AI achievements ahead of India are the US, China, the UK, France, Japan and Germany. Canada, South Korea and Italy are behind India in the top 10 AI adopters list, as per the study.

According to a recent report by McKinsey Analytics, Indian companies registered the highest adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in 2021 among emerging countries, ahead of China, Latin America, the Middle East, ASEAN nations, north Africa and South Asian nations -- which make up for all the ‘emerging economies’ in McKinsey’s definition.

However, the study clarifies that the technological environment is not specifically a mature one. “Among democratic countries, those with an immature technical environment are more likely to address ethics and governance, than those with a mature environment. We speculate that this reflects countries’ inexperience with these issues, thereby playing ‘catch up.'"

To rank countries for technological advancements and research initiatives, the study pegs the peak computing power of each country, the number of patents filed and the number of papers published in the field of AI. However, India's data on the same and its yearly progress has not been elaborated upon.
