The AI Supercomputer 'AIRAWAT', located at C-DAC in Pune, has been ranked 75th worldwide.

It was announced yesterday at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) in Germany in the 61st edition of the Top 500 Global Supercomputing List. It places India atop the list of AI supercomputing nations worldwide. The National AI Programme of India implemented the system.

"We need to make AI in India and AI work for India," Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said in his vision of "AI FOR ALL."

Speaking on the achievement, Shri Alkesh Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said, "AI is the most promising technology in the digital age." India has a strong AI ecosystem and competitive edge due to its abundant data, vibrant digital economy, and talented workforce. Applied AI in India focuses on Natural Language Processing, Image Procession, Pattern Recognition, Agriculture, Medical Imaging, Education, Health Care, Audio Assist, Robotics, and solutions for vital industries. He added that India would pursue AI technology to enable citizens and organisations to solve society's and the economy's most critical problems to improve the world.

"Proof of Concept (PoC) AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination Platform (AIRAWAT) of 200 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision peak compute capacity is currently funded by MeitY and implemented by C-DAC, Pune," said Shri Abhishek Singh, President & CEO of NeGD and MeitY Additional Secretary. The combination of the AIRAWAT PoC of 200 AI Petaflops and the PARAM Siddhi - AI of 210 AI Petaflops results in a total peak compute capacity of 410 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision and a sustained compute capacity of 8.5 Petaflops (Rmax) Double Precision. The maximum compute capacity (Dual Precision, Rpeak) is 13 Petaflops." He noted that AIRAWAT is in keeping with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision for the country, enabling technology and Artificial Intelligence for the welfare of ordinary people, thereby contributing to the nation's socioeconomic prosperity. MeitY has already planned a roadmap for increasing AIRAWAT to 1,000 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision compute capability to meet current AI computational requirements.

"C-DAC has been a pioneer in HPC and AI right from its inception," said Additional Secretary Meity Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar, "and this entry in the top 500 list is another feather in C-DAC's cap." The Ministry has long supported deploying larger supercomputing systems to boost scientific and technological innovation. The C-DAC should make such cutting-edge infrastructure available to the Indian population cheaply."
