India has raised the alarm in the international community against the possible misuse of AI by bad actors to disturb global peace and “fuel misinformation, divisions, and political instability.”

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council on the topic "Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace: Contemporary Drivers of Conflict and Insecurity", India highlighted how tools like AI deepfakes and 3D printing could be put to nefarious use by both state and non-state actors. Deepfakes are AI-generated fake videos that use deep learning to forge or swap faces and therefore identities of people.

TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the UN, said: "Terrorist and radical extremist groups today have unprecedented access to the general public through the internet, which allows for more efficient and effective recruitment, incitement, and propaganda, as well as the purchase of weapons and illegal money transfers."

Explaining how it is possible to use emerging technologies to automate the deployment of highly destructive weapons, thereby transferring the “responsibility over life and death from human moral systems to complex data systems, devoid of an ethical compass," Trimurti highlighted the loopholes in their monitoring and regulation.

Reaffirming New Delhi's resolve towards global peace, he added: "Going forward, India will continue to be a force multiplier for peacebuilding with an emphasis on the people-centric approach not just in our neighbourhood but also in Africa, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands and beyond."
