Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) has published its Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2022. This annual report tracks, collates, distills and visualizes data relating to AI.

According to the statistics presented in the Global Vibrancy Ranking, in the year 2021, India leads the world nations in Talent Concentration, Relative AI Skill Penetration and AI Hiring Index. India stands 3rd in the Global Vibrancy Ranking 2021. The national view of the vibrancy ranking includes a ranking across all metrics within a selected country in 2021, how the country compares with others on a selected metric and time-series data of all available metrics on a national level from 2017 to 2021.

The report states that the AI skill penetration rate shows the prevalence of AI skills across occupations or the intensity with which LinkedIn members use AI skills in their jobs. Similar to the previous year's ranking, India is followed by the United States and South Korea in the Relative AI Skill Penetration. According to the statistics, India and the United States is leading the other countries or regions in skill penetration rates in software and IT services, hardware and networking, manufacturing, education, and finance. According to the report India as well dominates in the skill penetration for females. When analysing the ratio, it was found that among the 15 countries listed, the AI skill penetration rates of women are higher than those of men in India.

The country has held a good position with regard to journal citations, journal publications and AI conference citations. Even though there was a decline in the total number of AI conference publications, the share of conference publications among the total conference publications in the world has increased by more than five percentage points since 2010. And India has managed to maintain its 3rd position in the AI conference publications following the United States and China. The percentage of AI conference publications in South Asia saw a noticeable rise in the past 12 years, from 4.0% in 2010 to 10.4% in 2021. South Asia is one of the regions that witnessed significant growth in the number of AI journal publications, where India holds the 3rd position in the global ranking.

In the AI adoption by organizations globally, broken out by geographic area, in 2021, India led with 65% adoption, followed by “Developed Asia-Pacific” (64%), “Developing markets (incl. China, MENA)” (57%), and North America (55%). The average adoption rate across all geographies was 56%, whereas India had an 8% increase from 2020.

It is evident from the report that, India has maintained its pace in the global AI race. Most factors have improved since last year. However, the nation lags in the private investment in AI by geographic area, the number of AI mentions in legislative proceedings, the number of AI-related bills passed into law. AI superpowers, the United States and China are way ahead in those parameters.
