Stanford releases the sixth edition of the AI Index Report. The report analyses the performance of world nations in, research and development, technical performance, technical AI ethics, the economy, education, public and governance, diversity and public opinion, a new chapter introduced this year. 

The report marks India first (3.2) in the AI skill penetration rates, followed by the United States (2.2) and Germany (1.7). The AI skill penetration rate is a metric created by LinkedIn that measures the prevalence of various AI-related skills across occupations. The nation tops the board (2.0), in the relative AI skill penetration rate across gender, 2015-22. 

According to the report, from 2010 to 2021, the total number of AI publications more than doubled, growing from 200,000 in 2010 to almost 500,000 in 2021. The greatest number of collaborations in the past 12 years took place between the United States and China.  

The percentage of AI conference publications in South Asia saw a noticeable rise in the past 12 years, growing from 3.6% in 2010 to 8.5% in 2021. Mirroring trends seen in other parts of the research and development section; India’s share of AI conference publications is also increasing. 

In 2022, the United States produced the greatest number of significant machine learning systems with 16, followed by the United Kingdom (8) and China (3). India stands 7th, with only one system. Furthermore, the country stands 9th with two authors producing significant machine learning systems.  

In 2022, for the first time, researchers from Canada, Germany, and India contributed to the development of large language and multimodal models. As of 2022, a large proportion of GitHub AI projects were contributed by software developers in India (24.2%). 

India stands 5th in the private investment in AI by geographic area, 2022 list and 6th in the 2013-22 sum. The country stands 5th in the number of newly funded AI Companies by geographic area in 2022, and 7th in the 2013-22 sum.  

India gained 10th position in the country-level data on robot installations, and 5th in the Annual Growth Rate of Industrial Robots Installed by Country, 2020 Vs. 2021. 71% of Indian respondents feel that products and services using AI have more benefits than drawbacks which made India attain 3rd position in the public opinion index after China and Saudi Arabia.
