Indian Navy is focusing on incorporating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in their upcoming projects. The Navy has already commenced involving its personnel in the new age technologies for future projects. The training for the personnel is being held at the Navy’s training schools and IIT campuses.

From 19th to 22nd January 2022, INS Valsura, Indian Navy’s premier technical institute organised a workshop on the topic “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Indian Navy”. Spokespersons from top companies like Google, IBM, Infosys and TCS provided their insights from an industry point of a few during the event. The workshop as well witnessed the involvement of academicians from IIT Delhi, New York University, Amrita University and DA-IICT who spoke about the varied applications of AI. 

Indian Navy is planning to integrate AI-grounded technologies in critical mission areas. Commander Vivek Madhwal stated that the AI initiatives are envisaged to have both “tactical and strategic level impact”. INS Valsura, which is located at Jamnagar has already been regarded as the Center of Excellence (CoE) in the field of big data. It has also been a state of art lab on AI and Big Data Analysis (BDA). 

The keynote address of the workshop was delivered by Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command. During his speech, he emphasised the importance of this technology and its application in the activities of the Indian Navy. Webinar also included over 500 participants from across the country. The navy looks forward to unifying and reorganising its enterprise data, as data is the soul of all AI-based projects. Regarding their upcoming venture, in a statement, the Indian Navy addressed that they are “currently in the process of creating a Center of Excellence (CoE) in the field of AI at INS Vasura”. 

They have formed an AI core group that meets twice a year for all initiatives related to AI and ML. These periodic reviews aim to ensure that the timelines are maintained. These initiatives put forth by the Indian Navy coexist with the grails in making “India a global leader in AI”.
