Prime Minister Modi gave a special address on day four of the World Economic Forum's Davos Digital Agenda, a virtual gathering of global leaders in government and industry held from 25-29 January, 2021. Speaking on the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, he highlighted how India is harnessing the power of AI to promote human-centric development. The PM demonstrated that India is a global player full of possibilities in tech-driven growth.
Following were the highlights of the PM's speech and his interaction with an expert panel that focused on Artificial Intelligence and its related technologies.
- As per the experts, Industry 4.0 will be based on four main factors: connectivity, automation, artificial intelligence and real-time data. The PM pointed out how India is at a strategic advantage given the massive digital infrastructure which allow us to generate large amounts of data – big data – at the cheapest rates.
- India is marching ahead with the resolve of being ‘atmanirbhar’ or self-reliant, a move that the PM believes will serve to strengthen globalism by advancing the business ecosystem in one of the biggest markets of the world. The PM expressed confidence in that the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission will be aided aptly by the forces of Industy 4.0.
- Applauding the expertise of the AI and ML engineers of India, the PM proudly declared that Indian tech talent has been recognised the world over. India’s pool of experts in automation and design is huge and it is for this reason that many global companies have their engineering centres situated in India.
- The coronavirus crisis has reminded us again how important humanity is as a value. And this is why the PM reiterates the importance of human-centric technology, saying: "Industry 4.0 is not about robots, it's about humans."
- India is also focusing on its micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the tech-driven fourth industrial revolution. Skilling, upskilling and reskilling initiative are being carried out to develop future-ready and industry-relevant skillsets. The PM ensures that efforts are on to bring technologies such as AI and ML to MSMEs.
- The digital profile of India has been transformed, thanks to appropriate investment and research in frontier technologies like Artificial Intelligence. Huge funds are being allocated to conduct these advances.
- The primary use of modern technologies is to ensure access, inclusion and empowerment, all while ensuring privacy of the users. The PM stated that issues of data protection are being taken care of through stringent laws that are underway.
- Two-thirds of India’s economic output comes from its cities. Therefore, sustainable urbanisation through smart cities is a great concern for India. Work is being done to bring citizen centric governance in 100 smart cities. Through the smart cities and digital India programs, India is working to converge the physical and digital worlds. New age public transport systems are being developed, and attention is being paid also to possibilities in electric mobility.
