American computer chipmaker Intel unveiled its first chip using Artificial Intelligence on August 20. The new chip developed at Intel's research facility in Haifa, Israel, is designed for large computing centres.
The inference chip, known as Nirvana NNP-I or Springhill, is based on 10 nanometer Ice Lake processor developed to address the demo of high-performance and power efficiency capabilities to accelerate and support complex data processes effectively.
According to Intel, its first AI hardware comes after it had invested in Israeli AI startups, including Habana Labs and NeuroBlade.
"In order to reach a future situation of 'AI everywhere', we have to deal with vast amounts of data generated and make sure organisations are equipped with what they need to make effective use of the data and process them where they are collected," said Naveen Rao, general manager of Intel's artificial intelligence products group to Reuters.
The new hardware chip is expected to help Intel Xeon processors in large companies as the need for complicated computations in the AI field increases, especially with increased proliferation of AI into the hardware system coming mainstream. The development of new chips is anticipated to aid Intel to boost its self-driving initiatives and register new deal wins from Mobileye.
