President Joe Biden said that it's still too early to tell if AI is dangerous but that tech companies should ensure their products are safe before putting them on the market.

Biden and his science and technology advisors discussed the risks and benefits of rapid breakthroughs in AI for users and national security.

"AI can help us deal with some tough problems, like disease and climate change, but it also needs to address the risks it could pose to our society, our economy, and our national security," Biden told the conference, which included researchers and executives from Microsoft and Google.

In recent months, the release of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT brought AI to the forefront of national and global conversations. It helped start a race among tech giants to release similar tools and raised ethical and social concerns about technology that can create convincing prose or images that look like humans made them.

Even though tech companies should always make sure their products are safe, Biden's reminder shows something new: the rise of easy-to-use AI tools that can make manipulative content and fake media that looks real, called "deepfakes," said Rebecca Finlay, CEO of the Partnership on AI, which is backed by the tech industry.

The White House claimed that the Democratic president would "talk about how important it is to protect rights and safety to make sure that innovation is done responsibly and that proper safeguards are in place." during the AI meeting and reiterate his call for Congress to pass laws to protect children and prevent technology companies from collecting too much data.

Last year, the Biden administration announced a series of broad aims to safeguard people from the harms created by the emergence of AI systems. These goals included rules for how to keep people's personal information safe and limit surveillance.

Furthermore, the AI Bill of Rights Blueprint did not specify enforcement actions. Instead, it was a demand for the U.S. government to preserve digital and civil rights in an AI environment.
