Kerala government is planning to bring important roads in the state under the scanner of AI-based cameras to reduce road accidents by half in two years. According to the safety experts, traffic rules could be enforced effectively once the software evaluates the violation of the traffic rules. Then, the fines will automatically come into being. Once the model captures the breach of the road rules, the footage will go directly to the central government’s server.

According to statistics, in India over 150,000 lives are lost annually due to accidents. About 450,000 vehicle accidents are reported in the country every year, with the state of Kerala, along with other states, contributing a fair share. In this context, the central government has directed the state governments to adopt necessary measures to reduce road accidents by 50 per cent by curbing over speeding by using real-time camera tracking technology. In Kerala, the numbers state that 4000 lives are lost and over 40000 injured on an average range in vehicle accidents every year.

Once this technology is installed, the vehicle owner will receive an SMS from the central server regarding the fine that must be remitted for the violation. The information will also go to the special court simultaneously. This will limit the local authorities from waiving the penalty.

High speeding and over speeding are the primary cause of accidents in Kerala. Last year, the state was vandalized by the negligence of biker youth, who treat public roads as race tracks. News channels in Kerala had reported the terrorizing stories of accidents and loss of life due to irresponsible driving. Even though changes were made in the speed limit on the national highway and other major roads in 2018, Kerala is still following the speed limits that were notified in the 2014 order. The speed limit for all vehicles near schools is 30 km/hour.
