The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), as part of the IndiaAI Mission, hosted a consultation session to discuss the establishment of the India AI Safety Institute (AISI) under the Safe and Trusted Pillar of the India AI Mission on 7th October 2024. The meeting, chaired by the Secretary (MeitY), brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from academia, industry, civil society, and international organizations, to collaboratively shape the institute's framework, scope, and operational model.
The primary objective of the consultation was to ensure that AISI aligns with national priorities while incorporating international best practices. Participants emphasized the critical need for such an institute, particularly as India positions itself as a global leader in the AI ecosystem. The rapid advancements in AI technology necessitate a robust governance framework that supports safe, responsible, and trusted AI development.
Discussions explored the structure and operational model of AISI connecting multiple centers of expertise across the country. Key themes included the importance of embedding safety measures in AI systems from the design phase, developing self-assessment tools for industry stakeholders, and creating a compliance framework that fosters innovation while ensuring accountability.
The session underscored the urgent need to establish AISI, which will play a dual role in promoting AI innovation and ensuring that AI technologies are deployed safely and ethically. International partnerships and collaboration with domestic organizations will also be explored to ensure AISI’s success as a global leader in AI safety.
