Ever since the ChatGPT integration into Bing, Microsoft has been all over the headlines. Seeing the results, Microsoft is planning to integrate AI into all of its areas, including video games. According to Semafor, Microsoft has developed an AI that is capable of playing their famous video game, Minecraft, all of its own. Unlike inputting actual commands and moving the avatar using the keyboard, an AI will act of its own free will when natural language commands are given. You only need to give commands like building a car or castle in AI Minecraft, where they complete the task independently. Generative AI is essentially used here for building objects rather than a player manually building objects.

Applying the natural language command in an open-ended game like Minecraft is challenging as there are multiple ways to do the same task. Updating the current version with this functionality is not expected any time soon. This demo was an experiment to see what the tech could develop. But this feature is expected to significantly impact the people who find it difficult to control the traditional gameplay. Currently, the AI can only manage repetitive tasks in Minecraft, which means players should do creative work such as construction.

According to the PC Gamer reports, the company has been trying this since last year May. Last year, they showcased a similar demo, collaborating with OpenAI to train a neural network to play Mine craft by analysing 70,000 hours of recorded gameplay footage of real individuals playing the game. However, the model used in the current demo is not disclosed. Roblox, a rival of Minecraft, has also openly discussed the inclusion of Generative AI in developing video games.
