Looking at the important role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies will play in India's growth, the government may look at funding research projects that are aligned towards exploring responsible AI according to a discussion paper by NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of the Government of India. They also plan on introducing ethics of AI in the mainstream university curriculum to encourage the youth to explore responsible and unbiased AI systems in the near future.

The draft paper, 'Towards Responsible#AIForAll' also pointed out that there is immense scope of large-scale adoption of AI in several social sectors. While the paper also pointed out the potential harm posed by AI, it stated that there are existing laws and regulations in the Indian legal system to cover most of the situations that were listed under 'Systems Consideration'. The paper foresees several risk-mitigating tools for AI in the near future as increasing number of government, and private players are looking at developing tools for the same.

The rapid rise in job automation is another topic that has been covered in the draft paper. "Manufacturing and IT services, sectors that account for 10 million and 3 million jobs a year are particularly impacted," it said. Sector-specific laws for AI will need to be created to protect human interests. It also noted that in the government, ministries and departments are looking to deploy AI solutions.

The NITI Aayog has invited comments from stakeholders on this discussion paper by August 10.
