Research on applications of AI and ML algorithms is reported to aid in predicting critical events such as mortality, length of ICU stays etc. The research is being carried out by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

According to the Indian Express report, Prof GD Puri, Dean (Academics) and Head, Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, and his team, led by Dr Rajarajan Ganeshan, are reportedly making inroads into the world of AI and ML in medicine along with the support of the cardiothoracic vascular surgery team under Dr Shyam Kumar Singh Thingnam and Dr Nitin Auluck’s section at IIT, Ropar.

An interdisciplinary team is working under their guidance to develop a predictive platform along with the existing Anesthesia information and Management System (AIMS) to aid the decision-making process. This team comprise Sushant Konar, a PhD scholar and an Indian Council of Medical Research-sponsored research fellow under Dr Puri.

AIMS has already deployed and is functioning in the four cardiothoracic vascular surgery operation theatres at the Advanced Cardiac Centre of the Institute. They would now be able to utilize the resources better and predict adverse outcome probabilities by promoting enhanced cardiac care post-surgery with the help of the new technology.

A recently filed copyright application for a software program capable of extracting relevant and from patient reports. Along with that, with an eye on future and advanced applications, a foundation is being laid to utilize supercomputing resources to address the computational needs of medical applications. Also, a recent grant received under the ambit of the National Supercomputing Mission aims at developing and implementing software technologies enabling such cardiac applications with limitless potential. Prof. Puri stated that they are committed to the call of Digital India and Make in India. They would boldly endeavor to break the boundaries of various disciplines and venture into a new interdisciplinary future.
