Brad Smith is a lawyer and a global leader, who leads a team of 1,400+ business, legal and corporate affairs professionals in 56 countries. He has been the President of Microsoft since 2015 and also serves at the company's Chief Legal Officer. He has been with Microsoft since 1993, making him the longest-serving executive at Microsoft - a bridge between the company's humble beginnings led by Bill Gates and today's cloud computing giant led by Satya Nadella.
He started his career in Microsoft, in 1993 when he led the company's Legal and Corporate Affairs team in Europe and then served as the deputy general; eventually to become the general counsel in 2002. During his illustrious career, Mr Smith has represented Microsoft in the anti-trust battle against the United State, settled several cases against the Corp's competitors such as AOL, Time-Warner, etc and led the negotiations with the European Commission. He also is a champion for the protection of customer data, having file four different lawsuits against the United States between 2013 and 2016.
His work focusses on a wide range of interlinked issues such as cybersecurity, privacy, ethics and artificial intelligence (AI), human rights, sustainability and philanthropy.
He is a revered member of the tech industry worldwide and is considered a leader in the matter of privacy and immigration. He was termed "a de facto ambassador for the technology industry at large" by the New York Times. In 2013, Mr Smith was named one of "The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America," by the National Law Journal.
Apart from his leadership at Microsoft, Mr Smith serves as a board member for Code.organd Netflix and is a dedicated philanthropist. His alma maters include Colombia and Princeton.
On Day 2 of the RAISE 2020, Mr Smith will be the keynote speaker and will share his views on the role of data in responsible AI and the need for data governance.
